Artwork Photography in Ridgewood, Queens

Normally these monthly roundups feature my five favorite shoots from that month, however I'm taking a break from shooting to recover from surgery for about 2 months, so I figured this time would be the perfect excuse to dig back through the archives from this year, and finally share some assignments that deserved a post at the time but never got one. And also maybe injecting an editorial opinion or two since I’m more or less stuck in bed for the time being. All that being said…here is the next one :)

Photographing artwork is one of those things that seems like it should be simple until you actually try to do it. But creating a photograph that accurately represents a painting is surprisingly technical, especially when color, texture, and detail matter.

I was hired to photograph a selection of paintings for local artist, Mike Shatz, in their home studio. The pieces ranged from medium to large-scale canvases, many with heavily textured paint. One thing people often don’t realize is that photographing artwork and reproducing artwork are two different things. If the goal is a perfect file for high-end printing or archival reproduction, scanning is usually the better tool because it captures the artwork in a different way. Photography, however, is ideal for websites, portfolios, exhibitions, press materials, and sharing work online, where the goal is to create a faithful and visually appealing representation of the original piece.

Here are some of my favorite images from this shoot (click/tap to view full size and un-cropped):
