Pre-Prom Solo Portrait Shoot in Crown Heights, Brooklyn
This pre-prom photoshoot was supposed to be a session for a young man and his date, but his date was running late… and eventually it became clear she wasn’t going to make it while I was there. So instead of wasting the hour, we made the most of it: solo portraits of him in his suit, some fun family photos, and a few shots on the nearby basketball court. Since he’s a basketball player, getting him out of the formalwear-and-standing-still routine and onto the court ended up being some of my favorite photos from the session.
The whole shoot was one hour outdoors near the family’s home, and it’s a good example of how he original plan can change pretty quickly: someone can be late, the weather can shift, a location can not work…but there’s still plenty we can do with the time we have. For prom and graduation photos in particular, I’d rather give a teenager a set of photos that actually feels like them and will serve as cherished memories for their family.

All images in this blog post were shot on a Nikon D850, using a 24-85mm zoom lens, all individually post-processed in Adobe Lightroom.
