Artist Studio Portraits in Long Island City, Queens

Some portrait sessions are all about the person. Others are just as much about the work.

This shoot took place in the Long Island City studio of abstract landscape painter Despina Cushing. The goal was to create a set of images she could use for press, publications, and professional materials, while also documenting the environment where the work itself is created. Rather than treating it like a traditional headshot session, we approached it more like a conversation, moving through the studio, discussing her process, and photographing her alongside the paintings in various stages of completion.

For artists, the studio is often part of the story. The tools, materials, works in progress, and even the way a space is organized can tell you as much about a person as a formal portrait can. My approach was to create images that felt natural and personal while still being polished enough for professional use.

All images in this blog post were shot on a Nikon D850 using a variety of lenses, and all individually post-processed in Adobe Lightroom using custom-built presets.
